When I first arrived in Australia from Chile in 2014, I never imagined how difficult it would be to restart my professional career. Back home, I had a degree in Economics, a Master’s in Finance, and seven years of experience as an Investment Professional. Yet, when I migrated, none of that seemed to matter. I found myself working as a waitress, trying to support my family while figuring out how to navigate a completely new job market.
By the time I was ready to reintegrate into my profession—three years after my arrival—I was a mum of two kids under four, juggling childcare, financial pressures, and the uncertainty of starting over. I didn’t know who to ask for help, what was acceptable in job interviews, or how to position my experience in a way that made sense in the Australian market. It was overwhelming, lonely, and, at times, disheartening.
I know I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. So many professional migrant women face the same barriers—qualified, experienced, and eager to contribute, yet struggling to break through. That’s why I’m beyond excited to share that Professional Migrant Women (PMW) is launching an online community platform—a space built by and for skilled migrant women to support each other, reclaim our careers, and thrive at every level of Australian society.

No one should have to navigate this journey alone. I wish I had a platform like this when I was trying to figure it all out. But now, together, we can make sure the next generation of migrant women doesn’t have to start from scratch, alone, like I did.
